2015 Good Scout Award Luncheon

Honoring United Dairy Farmers

Wednesday, February 25, 2015

10:45am VIP Reception |  11:30am to 1:00pm Program

Duke Energy Convention Center, Downtown Cincinnati

Baseball hall of famer, Joe Morgan, will be the guest speaker during the 2015 Good Scout Award Luncheon - hosted by the Dan Beard Council, Boy Scouts of America- at the Duke Energy Convention Center on Feb. 25.

The Good Scout Award Luncheon is Greater Cincinnati's seventh largest annual fundraiser. Bringing together 1,400+ guests in support of local Scouting programs, the GSAL features a nationally known keynote speaker and is a “can't miss” networking event.

On November 29, 1971, the Houston Astros traded Joe Morgan for Lee May. The deal facilitated a shift in Reds team philosophy towards speed over power, with Morgan and outfielder Pete Rose now two key figures batting back-to-back. Morgan added outstanding speed on the base paths and excellent defense. After joining The Big Red Machine, Morgan appeared in eight consecutive All-Star Games (1972–1979). Morgan, along with teammates Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, and Dave Concepcion, led the Reds to consecutive championships in the World Series in 1975 & 1976. Morgan drove in the winning run in Game 7 of the 1975 World Series, now ranked as one of the greatest World Series of all time.

A 10 time All-Star, Morgan retired with 2,571 hits and 1,133 RBI's. He also hit 268 home runs to go with 449 doubles and 96 triples and was considered by some the finest base stealer of his generation (689 steals at greater than 80% success rate). Besides his prowess at the plate and on the bases, Morgan was an exceptional infielder, winning the Gold Glove Award in consecutive years from 1972 to 1976. After his career ended, he was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1987, and his jersey number 8 was retired.

On April 21, 2010 Morgan returned to the Reds in the role of "special advisor to baseball operations" where works in both the baseball side and community outreach side for the Reds. Morgan currently serves as a member of the board of the Baseball Assistance Team, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping former Major League, Minor League, and Negro League players through financial and medical hardships. Additionally, in 2010 Morgan opened Joe Morgan Honda in Monroe, Ohio.

On February 25th, more than 1,500 people gathered at the Duke Energy Convention Center in support of Scouting in the Dan Beard Council. Theluncheon raised more than $650,000 in support of Scouting in the Dan Beard Council.  Thank you to everyone who was a part of this great event. The guest speaker for the day was Joe Morgan.  Joe not only shared lots of fun stories of his time as part of the Big Red Machine, but he also talked about being a scout as a young man and the influence his family had on his life. This year’s theme of “Celebrating Family” was evident as United Dairy Farmers and the Lindner Family were recognized as our Good Scout Award honoree.  Also recognized was the Scouting Family at Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church.  They were presented the BSA’s North Star Award for always leading the way.
