The Dan Beard Council welcomed everyone to a Youth Protection Summit which brought together the leadership of youth serving organizations in our community to discuss and collaborate on best practices to protect the youth that they serve. This important seminar focused on learning new skills and methods to adapt and improve those measures.

Join us at the Youth Protection Summit where we will hear from area experts on how we can all best support and protect the children in our communities and programs.

 

Keynote Speaker:

Robert Warfel

Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police, Xavier University

Robert Warfel is currently the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Prior to serving at Xavier, he was a Special Agent and Supervisory Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for approximately 22 years developing experience in case management, program management, and security operations including national and regional programs of diverse FBI security initiatives in both international and domestic environments. Robert Warfel’s experience and specialized knowledge developed expertise in Crisis Management, Media and Public Relations, Critical Incident Response, Continuity of Operations Planning, special event security operations, and team and human resource management.  Robert Warfel received his BA from Butler University and his Juris Doctorate from Ohio Northern College of Law and practiced law in Ohio before entering the FBI in 1997.

Tara Resendiz-Trejo

Assessments Section Chief, Hamilton County

Tara Resendiz-Trejo received her Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Tiffin University and Master of Arts Degree from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Mrs. Resendiz-Trejo started her career in Children’s Services in 2012 with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services as an Assessment Caseworker, later promoting to a Manager. Mrs. Resendiz-Trejo started her career with Hamilton County Job and Family Services in 2016 as a 241-KIDS After Hours Manager. She was one of the After-Hours Managers for 5 years and was a Safety Culture Administrator for a short period of time. Mrs. Resendiz-Trejo currently holds a position as an Assessments Section Chief in Hamilton County. Mrs. Resendiz-Trejo is approachable, knowledgeable, and passionate about ensuring staff are properly trained and informed regarding the agency’s Safety Decision Making Model and confident in their role at Hamilton County Job and Family Services.

Tony Coder

Executive Director, Ohio Foundation for Suicide Prevention

Tony Coder, a native of tiny Lewiston in Logan County, was appointed February 25, 2019 as new head of the foundation, which is a subsidiary of the National Association on Mental Illness Ohio. The foundation is housed in Columbus. Tony has a long history of dealing with mental health, addiction and social service issues, dating back to his first job as pastor of the LaPointe United Methodist Church in Ottawa County. As he felt God’s calling to ministry, Coder said he felt the calling to work in other ways to help people. That led to a position with Ohio Job and Family Services, then into the administration of former Ohio Gov. Bob Taft. Coder worked for First Lady Hope Taft from 2000 to 2006, primarily on drug and alcohol issues. He guided the award-winning Smart and Sober campaign, featuring former Happy Days actor Henry Winkler. He later worked again for Job and Family Services before joining the Drug Free Action Alliance as assistant director and later with the Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities.

Dr. Megan Schrantz

Therapist, Lindner Center of HOPE

Dr. Schrantz is a clinical psychotherapist for adults, adolescents, and children in outpatient and residential services at the Linder Center of HOPE.  She has over 30 years of experience providing individual, group, and family therapy in a variety of settings and greatly enjoys facilitating change and healing with her patients.

Dr. Schrantz offers a diverse range of skills and experiences. Prior to joining the staff at the Lindner Center of HOPE, Dr. Schrantz facilitated trauma-informed treatment to children and adolescents with traumatic experiences, sexual abuse, and grief at the Northern Kentucky Children’s Advocacy Center.  For over 20 years, she worked at Hillcrest Training School, where she was a leader in the development and implementation of evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral interventions for youth with co-occurring behavior, mood, and substance abuse disorders.  At Hillcrest, she was the lead group facilitator for the substance abuse treatment track and pioneered the first Trauma and Grief Component Therapy for Adolescents group therapy.  In addition, she was a skilled provider of psychological assessment and individual and group counseling.

Gretta Herberth

Gretta Herberth

Assistant Prosecuting AttorneyHamilton County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office – Family Law Division

Gretta Herberth began her legal career as a law clerk for the Honorable Frederick D. Nelson of the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas. From 2005-2009, she was a Clermont County Assistant Public Defender where she handled hundreds of felony and juvenile delinquency cases. Ms. Herberth joined Laufman & Napolitano in 2009. Her practice focused on Domestic Relations, Juvenile Law and Criminal Defense. During her time in private practice, Ms. Herberth became qualified, under Rule 48 of the Ohio Supreme Court’s Rules of Superintendence, to serve as a Guardian Ad Litem. After several years serving as a Guardian Ad Litem in private practice, she decided to join the Hamilton County Public Defender’s Office in 2014 in order to focus her career on representing the best interests of children. In February 2017, Ms. Herberth joined the Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office as a Team Lead in the Family Law Division where she represents Hamilton County Job and Family Services and supervises a team of assistant prosecutors.

Dr. Robert A. Shapiro, MD

Director, Child Abuse Team / Mayerson Center for Safe and Healthy Children and
Professor, UC Department of Pediatrics

Dr. Robert Shapiro is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and the Director of the Mayerson Center for Safe and Healthy Children at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. He has worked and published in the field of child abuse and neglect for over 25 years and has taken his work upstream to help families improve childhood outcomes by addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences. Dr. Shapiro is a principal leader within Joining Forces for Children, a community-wide collective impact initiative which aims to improve child health and development by reducing the effects of toxic stress.
