Troop 990 Hosts “A Bear Goes Fishing” Event for Area Cub Scouts
August 7, 2021 – Cincinnati, OH | In an effort to engage Cub packs in the West Chester area and give Summer 2021 a proper “send off”, Troop 990 hosted “A Bear Goes Fishing” on August 7, 2021. Having a plethora of knowledge about the Scouting program, Jennifer Roth, the Advancement Chair for Troop 990 (and former den leader for 3 years with Pack 941), designed the event with a two-fold purpose: arrange for Bears to meet Troop 990 Scouts AND earn a Bear Adventure Loop.
During the two sessions offered Saturday morning, a total of 19 Cub Scouts (16 of which were Bears) rotated through 5 instructional stations led by two certified BSA angling instructors and Troop 990 Scouts. Afterwards, the Cubs were able to put into practice what they learned about fish and fishing by casting their rods and trying to catch a fish!
Given the limited amount of scouting activity over the past year and a half (due to COVID-19 restrictions), it was refreshing to see kids enjoying each other’s company. As a bonus, Troop 990 Scouts gained leadership and instructional experience through teaching the Cub Scouts about fish habitat and handling, conservation, casting, fishing knots and rigging, and tackle.
Troop 990 is looking forward to making this an annual event, in addition to other outreach events (such as the annual AOL Fall “Scouting Adventure” Campout where any AOLs can complete Outdoor Adventurer and Scouting Adventurer Pins). See the flyer below for more information about this fun campout!. All are welcome, so sign up and join in the fun!
