Dan Beard Council Received Johnny Appleseed Award

The Dan Beard Council was chosen to receive the Johnny Appleseed Award at the Taking Root Initiative’s annual Tree Summit. This award is given to only a few individuals or groups each year, and we were selected because of the success of our biannual Camp Conservation Day event. Every April and November, Scouts (and other non-profit groups) come out to camp to remove invasive species and replant with native specimens. We even include a free hot lunch for those who register! Several hundred native trees and shrubs are planted at each event! This also contributes directly to the goal of our partners at the Taking Root Initiative, whose goal is to plant 2 Million trees by 2020 to help offset to the loss of the Cincinnati area’s native ash trees to the depredations of the invasive emerald ash borer. However, Camp Conservation Day needs support! If your family, your Scout Unit, or your community group is interested in donating trees, equipment, or especially time to help plant, you can contact Camp Experience Director Michael Stamat at Michael.Stamat@Scouting.org for more information.
