Director of Finance
Reports to: Scout Executive, President & Chief Executive Officer
Position Summary & Objective:
As a key member of the Executive Management Team, the Director of Finance (DoF) will play a strategic role in the organization’s overall leadership and help guide the council’s direction and strategy. The DoF will drive the formulation and execution of financial plans for the maximum financial performance of the council. Responsibilities encompass all financial, accounting, risk management and office operation matters.
The DoF role is responsible for the finance, accounting and business operations functions, including financial reporting and related systems development, maintenance and reporting; activities related to investments, endowments and gifts; audit/tax compliance; payroll; current and multi-year budgets; and office services. The DoF is the staff liaison with auditors, tax preparers, investment custodians, an various other internal and external constituents. The DoF has the responsibility for working collaboratively with all other departments to develop strategies for financial health through analysis to support strategic thinking and direction, establishing critical measurements, projections, and forecasts to lead the council’s long-range planning. The DoF is responsible for directing the council’s financial management in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), regulations and policies and ensures that the council’s day-to-day operations proceed efficiently and effectively.
Summary of Responsibilities:
1. Provide leadership to the CEO and senior leadership team on all matters pertaining to finance policy to ensure that financial strategies, decisions and functions effectively facilitate the achievement of council goals and maintain its financial health.
2. Provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends to assist the CEO and senior leadership in decision-making and goal execution.
3. Lead the day-to-day administration and control of the accounting, treasury and payroll functions to safeguard the council’s assets and to ensure financial transactions are timely, processed accurately, and recorded.
4. Direct accounting staff and ensure all financial records are maintained and reporting activities (internal and external) are carried out in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and national Scouting America guidelines.
5. Lead office staff in maintaining an effective operating environment.
Measurements:
1. Timely and accurate monthly/annual financial reporting.
2. Budget and forecast accuracy.
3. Strategic plan goal alignment and progress towards long-term targets.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s Degree required. CPA preferred.
2. Minimum of 8-10 years combined experiencein accounting, finance and business management with exposure to nonprofit organizations and public accounting a plus.
3. Thorough knowledge and application of general accounting and internal controls theory.
4. Excellent computer skills including proficiency in Excel and accounting software.
5. Proven high level of organizational, financial management, project management, personnel management, and communication skills.
6. Ability to work in a team environment with commitment to achieving organizational goals.
Essential Skills:
1. Mastery leading a finance department. Not-for-profit experience including accounting for fundraising activities and capital campaigns a plus. Proven ability to provide high quality financial reporting and analysis.
2. Significant staff leadership experience. Provide a positive professional example. Optimizes team member strengths and gets the best from every member.
3. Strong analytical skills, with ability to leverage statistical information, to develop and implement strategies to maximize performance.

9. Ability to coordinate multiple projects/assignments simultaneously and complete assigned tasks accurately and on a timely basis. Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational skills.
10. Fiscal management and budget development skills.
11. Mastery in the entire Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
