Making a planned gift is a wonderful way to show your support for the youth of the Dan Beard Council while accommodating your own personal, financial, estate-planning and philanthropic goals. With selective planning you may actually increase the size of your estate and/or reduce the tax burden on your heirs. Just as important, you will know that you have made a meaningful contribution to the future of Scouting

Benefits of a Charitable Bequest

Your estate planning attorney can include a provision in your will that leaves a lasting gift to the Dan Beard Council. Your bequest could be a gift of specific assets (such as a vehicle, artwork or a coin collection), a dollar amount, or a percentage of your estate. A bequest could also be made from the remainder of your estate or what is left after all gifts have been made to your heirs.

Some of the main benefits of Bequest giving are:

  • It costs you nothing today
  • A bequest is free of federal and estate tax
  • Your bequest can be changed later
  • You can still benefit heirs with specific gifts
  • You can leave a legacy through a bequest

One type of bequest to consider is a bequest from your IRA. If you leave your IRA to your children, your heirs could face a significant tax. There are assets that can be left to your family that can produce little or no tax. By making a bequest of your IRA to the Dan Beard Council, the full proceeds can be free of tax. Talk with your estate planner to designate the Dan Bard Council as a beneficiary of your IRA.

Two examples of Bequest language to assist you and your attorney follow:

  1. “I hereby give, devise and bequeath ($XXXX) to Dan Beard Council, Boy Scouts of America, a nonprofit organization located at 10078 Reading Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45241, Federal Tax ID: 31-0536651, for Dan Beard Council, Boy Scouts of America’s general use and purposes.”

  2. “I hereby give, devise and bequeath (Percentage of Your Estate) to Dan Beard Council, Boy Scouts of America, a nonprofit organization located at 10078 Reading Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45241, Federal Tax ID: 31-0536651, for Dan Beard Council, Boy Scouts of America’s general use and purposes.”

The James E. West Fellowship Award

James E. West was the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America (Now Scouting America). The James E. West Fellowship Award recognizes individuals who contribute $1,000 or more in cash or securities to the Dan Beard Council’s Endowment. Individuals may contribute toward a fellowship in honor of someone else: an Eagle Scout, parent, graduate, Silver Beaver award recipient, Vigil Honor recipient, Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, retiree, volunteer or special loved ones including non-Scouters, youth or adults. Fellowships can also be provided “in memory of” a departed loved one, business associate or special Scouter.
Contributions to the Endowment through the James E. West Fellowship are never spent. Only the interest is used to further the programs and outreach of the Dan Beard Council. Donors may make cumulative gifts to reach the following levels:

Diamond Member: $15,000

Gold Member: $10,000

Silver Member: $5,000

Bronze Member: $1,000

Recognition includes a Uniform Knot with the appropriate gift designation pin and certificate.

Thank you for considering a memorial donation in memory of those who have cared so much for Scouting. Scouting America, Dan Beard Council serves more than 30,000 local youth and families with programs that focus on developing citizenship skills, physical and mental strength and positive character values.

All memorial gifts will be placed in the council’s permanent endowment – which will allow Scouting to remain strong well into the future.

The Dan Beard Council is grateful for all of the volunteers past, present, and future who have helped to inspire the youth in our community and future generations to come.

You can donate online by clicking (Here but we need a Givesmart Page) or you can mail a check to:

Making a Gift

Below are some examples of how you might give; please contact your estate planning attorney for specifics.

A Gift From Your Will

You designate the DBC as the beneficiary of your asset by will, trust or beneficiary designation form.

IRS Rollover

If you are 70.5 or older, you can use your IRA to make a qualified charitable distribution. It may also satisfy your RMD, if applicable.

Charitable Gift Annuity

You may transfer cash or your appreciated property to the DBC in exchange for our promise to pay you fixed payments (with rates based on your age) for the rest of your life.

Charitable Lead Trust

You fund a Trust that makes gifts to us for a number of years. Your family receives the trust remainder at substantial tax savings.
