Top 10 Summer Activities Every Scout Should Try

Scouting doesn’t stop when school’s out—it gets even better! Use the summer months to explore, serve, and grow. Try something new, bring a friend, and live out the Scout Oath and Law every step of the way. Summer is the perfect season for Scouts to get outside, try new things, and make unforgettable memories. Whether you’re heading to camp or looking for adventure close to home, here are 10 awesome activities every Scout should experience this summer!

Go Camping (Even if it is in your backyard!)

Nothing says summer like setting up a tent, roasting marshmallows, and sleeping under the stars. If you can’t make it to a council campout, create your own mini adventure at home!

Hit the Trail

Take a hike at a local park or nature reserve. Practice map reading, identify wildlife, or plan a trail cleanup. Don’t forget your water, trail mix, and a buddy!

Build a rangutter regatta Boat

Use your creativity to design, decorate, and race your own mini sailboat. It’s a classic Cub Scout summer favorite and great for hot days! Click Here for more information on how to execute this fun project.

Attend a Scout Day at a ballpark or Theme park

Many councils (including Dan Beard!) host Scout Days with local sports teams or amusement parks. Enjoy the fun, score a patch, and represent Scouting with pride. Click Here to see upcoming dates!

Practice Outdoor Cooking

Try cooking a meal over a campfire or portable stove. Whether it’s foil packet nachos or banana boats, Scouts love learning new campfire recipes.

Earn a summer-themed merit badge

Challenge yourself to complete a merit badge that fits the season—like Swimming, Canoeing, Environmental Science, or Astronomy.

Volunteer in your community

Make a difference this summer by organizing a food drive, helping clean up a local trail, or creating care packages. Service is a big part of what it means to be a Scout.

Learn to fish (or go again!)

Fishing teaches patience, skill, and an appreciation for nature. It’s a great activity for all ages and a relaxing way to spend a summer morning.

Try a new water activity

Cool off with kayaking, paddleboarding, or even just splashing around at a local lake or pool. Always follow water safety rules and go with a buddy!

Attend Summer camp

Whether it’s a day camp or weeklong resident camp, summer camp at Camp Friedlander and Cub World is packed with adventure—archery, swimming, crafts, climbing, and more. It’s the highlight of the year for many Scouts!
