SCOUTS CONTINUED TO ACHIEVE RANK ADVANCEMENT IN 2020 WITH VIRTUAL MERIT BADGES & VIRTUAL STEM NOVA COURSES!

Scouts, both Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA, were able to continue achieving rank advancement during the pandemic in 2020 by completing virtual Merit Badges and virtual STEM NOVA courses! Covering topics such as Cooking, Public Health, Citizenship in the World, Scouting Heritage and more, Scouts were able to continue their Scouting adventure despite being on lock-down due to COVID-19. In 2020, 612 merit badges, 150 Cub Scout NOVA’s and 90 Scouts BSA NOVA’s were earned by our virtual programs!

The Dan Beard Council, BSA was one of the leaders in creating virtual content for our Scouts, in which, we paved the way for other Councils across the nation who were also able to share our programs virtually with their Scouts and volunteers. Check out more about virtual Scouting here.

Below are just a few of the merit badges that were offered virtually in 2020. Most of these merit badges are not typically held virtually. For example, for the First Aid merit badge, Scouts had to make videos of themselves demonstrating the First Aid requirements.

Scouts do amazing things. These young men and women dedicate their time and energy in order to help others and serve their community with a multitude of service projects each year. Below are just a handful of ways our Scouts gave back to their community by creating a service project that demonstrates how a Scout truly lives by the Scout Law by being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Local Eagle Scout 3-D Prints Face Mask Ear Guards for Health Care Workers in Community

Anthony W. of Troop 44, chartered by the Bridgetown Middle School PTA, wanted a way to help others during the Coronavirus (COVID-19). When he saw a Facebook post from a fellow Scout from Canada who was 3-D printing mask ear guards for healthcare workers, he immediately knew he could be doing this as well for healthcare workers locally in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area. The 3-D printed plastic ear guards are extremely helpful for healthcare workers who wear their masks hours at a time. The mask ear guards protect their ears from getting sore and are an essential item for them in the recent crisis of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

As of Friday, April 10, 2020, Anthony has printed over 500 mask ear guards over the course of seven days which were all donated to local hospitals. Read more…

Local Eagle Scout Builds Outdoor Space for Student Ministry in Greater Cincinnati Area

Nick B. of Troop 301, chartered by St. John Westminster Union Church, built an outdoor space at Crossroads Westside for their student ministry and other small groups for his Eagle Scout project in 2020. His project included adding benches and building a fire pit. Over many months of planning and building, Nick spent 45 hours on the project personally, with total hours accumulating to over 112 hours with the help of volunteers. Nick ran into a few setbacks such as building closures due to pandemic restrictions, project delays due to contact-tracing quarantining, and escalation of pricing due to unforeseen circumstances. Nick was able to overcome all of these challenges by making adjustments to his plan, which only helped him understand the project process even more.

“Scouts has been a place where I can learn skills that I wouldn’t learn anywhere else…I think the Eagle Scout Project is an amazing way to put leadership skills to use and it is amazing to see the fruits of one’s work when the project is done.”

Seven Scouts from Local Troop in Greater Cincinnati Awarded Eagle Scout

Continuing a strong legacy in what can only be described as a unique year, Troop 281 of Anderson Hills United Methodist Church awarded seven young men the rank of Eagle this past November. Despite obstacles due to COVID -19 restrictions, the Troop was able to safely conduct the ceremony on November 8, 2020. Although restrictions limited the number of people able to attend in person, in the true spirit of scouting, leaders utilized their creative resources and were able to live stream the event for those that were not able to attend. The program highlighted the Scouts’ achievements and challenged them to continue their journey as Eagle Scouts. “Throughout the program we heard the Scouts rally around themes like perseverance, commitment and humble gratitude,” observed Doug Siebenburgen, Eagle Scout and organizer of the ceremony. “The ceremony highlighted the importance of service to the community as well as celebrated the outstanding personal achievement of our next generation of young people – even in the midst of a pandemic.” Read more…

SILVER BEAVER AWARD

The Silver Beaver Award is bestowed upon only those persons who have given continued, unselfish, and effective service to the community, usually through the program of the Boy Scouts of America, but not limited to Scouting. Because Scouters may not nominate themselves for this award, only those persons who have been nominated by their Scouting peers are considered. The Silver Beaver Award is the highest recognition the Dan Beard Council can bestow upon its volunteer leaders.
