In February, the Boy Scouts of America embarked on the most comprehensive listening exercise in its history to consider the impact of potential changes to its membership standards policy on the organization and gather perspectives from inside and outside of the Scouting family. This review created an outpouring of feedback from the Scouting family and the American public, from both those who agree with the current policy and those who support a change. The review confirmed that this issue remains among the most complex and challenging issues facing the BSA and society today.
The Dan Beard Council has been committed to a dialogue on this topic within the Scouting family at all levels of the organization. To expand this important discussion and to gather as much information necessary to accurately convey the opinions of our members at the national vote, the Dan Beard Council developed several methods to gather its members direct feedback. These included:
1. The Voice of Scout survey that went live on March 8th. A link to this survey was emailed out to Scouters across the country with a valid e-mail in their registration profile.
2. Collection of local feedback through an online survey that contained the same questions asked in the Voice of the Scout survey. This survey was active from March 8th through March 31st. A paper version of this survey was also available for completion at the Scout Achievement Center, at the Informational Meetings (see below), or by mail if requested.
3. (5) Council Information Meetings, sharing materials provided by the national council that focus on an even presentation of the topic, and allowed members to hear about the upcoming timeline and procedures. These meetings took place the week of March and April 1st at the locations around the Council.
We thank you for your all of your input and feedback. It is with your feedback that we can continually improve this great program and actively share the collective voice of our members. After the listening phase, we compiled the results of the information into a sense of the Council document. You can read the full contents of this document here:
Thank you again for all that you do for Scouting and for your participation throughout this process. Please continue to stay active in Scouting and to provide feedback in all areas of Scouting so that we can continue to enhance this great program. Going forward, everyone within the Scouting family must work to stay focused on that which unites us, reaching and serving young people to help them grow into good, strong citizens as we prepare young people for lives of adventure, leadership, learning, and service. With your help, we can accomplish incredible things for young people and the communities we serve.
