Two members of the Dan Beard Council have been selected to participate in the annual Scout Association of Japan/Boy Scouts of America Friendship Exchange Program. Derek Thompson of Troop #944, Ft. Hamilton District was selected as a youth participant while Dave Bruno, International Scouting Representative for the Dan Beard Council, will be one of the adult leaders.
The Friendship Exchange Program is an annual event that is aimed at promoting international understanding and friendship between the two countries. The Boy Scouts of America will send one troop composed of 28 scouts and 6 leaders selected from throughout the United States. The group will participate in the 2010/2011 Scout Youth Forum and experience the Japanese way of life through the home hospitality program. The exchange will also deepen the understanding and knowledge of Japanese community, history, culture, and industries. The participants will have the opportunity to visit with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Educational touring of Tokyo, Fuji, and Kamakura will also be included. The Friendship Exchange Troop will depart Dallas on February 3 for Tokyo and return to the United States on February 13.
