The Future of Camp Michaels

Camp Michaels has long been the Dan Beard Council's beloved rustic camp in the beautiful back-country of Northern Kentucky. The Visioining Process

Written by Mike Swofford Monday, 16 May 2011 02:11

The following is the original Camp Michaels Visioning Process Plan, the guiding document first published in June, 2010. It is presented here to give an understanding of how the process came about to describe how the process was intended to go:

Feedback from the council’s membership has indicated there may be an interest in new program opportunities at Camp Michaels. In addition, the lack of regular maintenance and the need for several critical facility improvement projects has placed the council in a position where a decision is necessary as to the future of the camp, its place within the council’s camping programs, and the scope and depth of work to be done to bring the camp to an acceptable standard for the Dan Beard Council.

Field Testing Phase

Written by Mike Swofford Wednesday, 25 January 2012 13:04

Now that an initial concept of the camp has been created, the next step is to "field test" the vision with focus groups representative of the council membership. Between February and March, 2012, the visioning committee will be hosting field test focus groups across the council to present the vision proposal and gauge interest and gather feedback. These strategically chosen groups will represent many of the cross-sections of the council membership.

Listening to Leaders: The Survey Results

Written by Mike Swofford Tuesday, 09 November 2010 00:54

The first phase of the Camping Michaels visioning process was open discussions with summer camp leaders to collect their needs, ideas, and perspectives regarding the property. The second phase was an online survey, opening in October 2010 and closing in February 2011, and hosted by the Ku-Ni-Eh Lodge of the Order of the Arrow. The survey was promoted through a button on the front page of the council website, flyers distributed at events, district roundtable meetings, and council events, and through messages sent to district email distribution lists.

The following is a high-level summary of the participants and the data gathered, intended as a prelude to the third phase of the visioning process – the Camp Michaels Visioning Committee. You can also download the full Camp Michaels Visioining Survey and Analysis:

Initial Focus Group Results

Written by Mike Swofford Monday, 16 May 2011 15:57

focusgroupSeveral meetings were held during the 2010 summer camp season with leaders attending with their Scouts. The number of attendees ranged from 5 to 18. The mix of leaders included representatives from Ohio, Kentucky, and out of Council. It is worth noting that several of the leaders were also involved in Venturing and had thoughts on how Venturing might benefit from Camp Michaels development. The discussions used a roundtable format, with guiding questions. The feedback and ideas gathered from these focus groups became the source of questions and ideas for the online survey. The following is a brief summary of the ideas collected at these meetings.
