Good Scout Award Luncheon Exceeds Goal!

On February 25th, more than 1,500 people gathered at the Duke Energy Convention Center in support of Scouting in the Dan Beard Council.

This year’s theme of “Celebrating Family” was evident as United Dairy Farmers and the Lindner Family was recognized as our honoree.  Also recognized was the Scouting Family at Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church.  They were presented the BSA’s North Star Award for always leading the way.

The guest speaker for the day was Joe Morgan.  Joe not only shared lots of fun stories of his time as part of the Big Red Machine, but he also talked about being a scout as a young man and the influence his family had on his life.

The luncheon raised more than $650,000 in support of Scouting in the Dan Beard Council. Thank you to everyone who was a part of this great event.

Over 300 Eagle Scouts Honored at Eagle Scout Court of Honor

The Dan Beard Council, Boy Scouts of America recognized over 300 local Eagle Scouts and awarded the 2014 Eagle Scout Project of the Year at the Eagle Court of Honor ceremony on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at The Cincinnati Masonic Center.

The Eagle Scout Award is the highest rank a Scout can attain. It represents many years of dedicated effort, and the successful completion of a long process that starts when the young man becomes a Boy Scout. It is a demonstration of how people, working together, can truly help mold a young man with a solid sense of leadership, citizenship, and responsibility. It is a great achievement for all involved: the Scout, his family, his community, his unit, and the Boy Scouts of America.

U.S. Senator, Rob Portman, presented the Honoree award during the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony. To celebrate his commitment to Scouting, John Steele Sr. --Vice Chairman of Hilltop Basic Resources, Inc. and Life Scout -- was recognized as the Honoree.

25th Anniversary and Eagle Scout Court of Honor Celebration of Scout Unit 772

This year marks the 25th Charter Anniversary of Boy Scout Troop 772 and Cub Scout Pack 772, which was founded in November, 1989. The unit is charterd by the Boy Scouts of America, to Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church in Woodlawn, Ohio, and is a part of the church's youth ministry. The unit has proudly served the community and Dan Beard Council Boy Scouts of America.

The unit's motto is "Serving the Community and Our Youth." Our anniversary theme is "Honoring Our Past..........Encouraging Our Future!"

Also help us congratulate Malik Ervin, David Montgomery and Matthew Posey. They became Eagle Scouts 12/13/14.

CBP Cincinnati Explorers collect over $5000 in Christmas gift for children

CBP Explorer Post 2545 coordinated efforts among CBP employees in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky this holiday season to help kids in need.  Employees from both Field Operations and Regulatory Audit participated in this annual event. The CBP explorers and employees joined forces with St. Joe’s Orphanage to “adopt” 50 kids who are being provided homes through the orphanage.  Employees each selected a specific child or donated money to a shopping fund to provide gifts for the kids.  The ages of these kids ranged from 8 months to 20 years old and their wish lists included everything from toys, gift cards, video games, personal items, books, and clothing.  The explorers purchased gifts for 12 of the children with the donated money including $300 from their own post funds.  The total value of all items donated exceeded $5000.  Every child received several items from their wish list and the gifts filled the CBP extended cargo van to maximum capacity.  This is the ninth year that Cincinnati CBP employees have come together to partner with St. Joe’s.

The Explorers were also invited to attend the annual Christmas Party that St. Joe’s hosts for these kids.  9 Explorers and 3 CBP Explorer Advisors attended the party and served the children dinner, helped with the raffle, assisted in handing out the presents to the kids, and helped to clean up the gymnasium after the party was over.  The Explorers and the Advisors enjoyed the time they were able to spend with these kids and came away from the experience with a better appreciation for what they have and feeling good that they were able to contribute to someone else’s happiness this holiday season.

Environmental Grant From Duke Energy

CINCINNATI, Ohio – On Thursday, Dec. 4, Duke Energy today announced the 2014 environmental grant recipients on behalf of the Duke Energy Foundation.

Awards were presented to the Dan Beard Council and 13 other recipients during a news conference at the Cincinnati Nature Center in Milford on December 4, 2014.

“Duke Energy is recognizing the pride and vision of 14 wonderful organizations in our community that all strive to excel and build a sustainable environment,” said Jim Henning, president of Duke Energy Ohio and Kentucky. “Our region is fortunate to have such vibrant green spaces, and the many organizations that commit themselves to environmental awareness and responsibilities as an example for the rest of us to follow.”

The grant will be applied toward Dan Beard's Outdoor Education Center. This will support the camp programs at Cub World, which is designed to provide the youngest Scouts (Cub Scouts ages 8-10) with their first exposure to Scouting's outdoor adventure. The purpose of the Outdoor Education Center will be to accelerate the process of experiential learning for these Scouts focusing on conservation, ecology, nature, and the natural world; so that they may begin to develop an appreciation of, understanding for, and interest in these topics and concepts at an early age. It is anticipated that 1,300 Cub Scouts will utilize the Cub Scout Outdoor Education Center during the summer camp season, and that an additional 300 disadvantaged, at-risk youth will participate in programming through “Challenge Camp,” a Council outreach initiative. An additional 1,500 Cub Scouts will utilize the Outdoor Education Center outside of the summer camp season.

Scout saves grandfather from snake

While backpacking with his grandfather in the Cumberland Mountains near Cumberland Gap, Isaac Ramsey, a 10 year-old Scout from Troop 122 in Burlington,Ky., stopped his grandfather from stepping on a 4 ft. Diamondback rattlesnake.

“At the bottom of a steep hill, where a small stream crossed the trail, Isaac grabbed me from behind while shouting "Snake! Snake!," said John Ramsey, Isaac’s grandfather. “I was one step away from stepping on the snake as it crossed the trail. Isaac's quick action possibly saved my life!”

They were traveling west along the Ridge Trail after leaving the White Cliffs area. Isaac and his grandfather were a least three hours away from assistance.

Jason Baldridge, now with the Atlanta Area Council, is also due thanks for his many months or preparation towards the assessment process.

"We are fortunate to have two fantastic and effective Camp Directors that have excellent camp staff teams delivering our summer programs," said Mike Swofford, Director of Program Support Services. "I hope you will share the success of our summer camps with other Scouters and friends and spread the word that we have some of the highest quality, safest camps in the nation. We should be proud of the Dan Beard Council’s exceptional summer camp programs."

Invest in Today's Local Scouting

The Dan Beard Council prepares more than 33,000 youth to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Scouting provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.

By making an investment in local youth for the coming year, you'll be helping to support a Scout legacy of leadership, values, and character development.  Each dollar helps to send boys to camp and support volunteer leaders and mentors with the tools and resources needed to provide a high quality program for the development of our local youth.  Scouts are renowned for many things including great community service projects, doing a good turn deed daily, and building the leadership skills to always be prepared.  Your investment today, along with your time and talents, are among the greatest gifts you can give to support our local youth.  Thank you for your support.
