“I want to come back to Philmont!”
That’s what YOU will say by the end of your 1st trip to Philmont. And by the end of every Philmont trip you make.
“I want to hike between the breathtaking peaks and into the endless valleys. I want to make a Class 5 climb up a rock face, to ride horses through mountain meadows, to shoot black powder rifles, to fish in clear mountain streams, to pan for gold. I want to hike through haunted Urraca Mesa, to see the B-24 bomber 1942 crash site. I want to fly a kite from the top of Mt. Baldy (elev. 12,441 ft.), to hike to the top of the Tooth of Time and view the valleys that the wagon trains came through on their way west.”
“I want to go to Philmont.”
YOU CAN! And you do not have to wait for your unit to arrange it’s own Philmont trip. Each year, DBC sends several crews to Philmont, with space for youth and adults, male and female. The Council Contingent trip is ideal for youth from small units that do not have enough interest to arrange their own Philmont trip. You will find more information about the Dan Beard Council Contingents below at Philmont 2013 or Philmont 2014. You will find information about your unit arranging it’s own Philmont trip at Philmont Unit Expeditions.
The Philmont experience is unlike any other offered by BSA. Revered among Scouts as being the “ultimate” Scouting adventure, Philmont promises breathtaking scenery, personal challenges and many team building experiences. It is considered by many to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and the epitome of scouting adventures. The opportunity does not present itself often, and all who qualify are encouraged to take the challenge. It will be a time of great physical, emotional and spiritual growth. The experience promises to be both tough and rewarding. It promises to provide memories to last a lifetime.
Philmont Scout Ranch is owned and operated by the Boy Scouts of America. Philmont is large, comprising 137,493 acres of rugged mountain wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) range of the Rockies. The high mountains rise to elevations ranging from 6,500 ft to Mt. Baldy’s towering 12,441 ft. (To appreciate this, consider that Cincinnati is at 560 ft.) The ranch operates 32 staffed camps and 50 unstaffed camps, and offers a variety of programs that provide a range of challenging outdoor experiences. Crews backpack for 11 days, typically covering 6-12 miles a day, accompanied by an experienced Philmont Ranger for the first two days of the trek.
"I want to sign up for the Council trip to Philmont."
Registration for the Council contingent for the summer of 2013 is open. Registration for the Council contingent for the Summer of 2014 will be available January 1, 2013. See details below.

Dan Beard
The trip is open to Scouts and Venturers (male and female) living within Dan Beard Council who, by July 8, 2013, will be at least 14 years old or at least 13 years old and entering the 9thgrade. Youth applications must include a completed Scoutmaster or Crew Advisor recommendation. Adult Crew Advisor (male and female) will be selected based on personal interviews. Adult Crew Advisors will be selected without consideration of whether their children, or youth from their troop or crew, are participants in this trip.
Physical conditioning and advance preparation is critical to the success of the contingent. There will be a two night shakedown backpacking trip on April 26-28, which is mandatory for all participants.
The cost of the trip is $1,550, which includes all transportation costs, admission fees, meals and lodging during the trip and the cost of the shakedown weekend before the trip. You supply your personal gear, Trading Post money, and enthusiasm.
A $150 application fee is due upon registration. The remaining $1,400 balance is due in $350 payments on November 15, January 15, March 15 and May 15. Any payments which were due before you join the contingent are due at the time you join.
If you are outside of Dan Beard Council and are interested in joining our Philmont Contingent, you should register to be placed on the waiting list. After January 1, 2013, youth from the waiting list will be contacted to fill available spots. You do not need to submit the application fee or make any payments while you are on the waiting list.
Register on line at https://www.doubleknot.com/registration/calendardetail.asp?ActivityKey=729501, or by downloading, completing and mailing the Philmont 2013 Registration Application.
Participants must be in excellent physical condition. The height and weight requirements on the Annual BSA Health and Medical Record for High Adventure apply (available at http://www.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/part_d.pdf).
REFUND POLICY:
Dan Beard Council makes substantial payments and commitments well in advance of the departure date. It is important that you make your payments when they are due. Be aware that the refund policy applies to you if you withdraw for any reason, even if your home unit obtains its own spot at Philmont.
If you withdraw, you may receive a partial refund of the amount you have paid in one of two ways:
(A) The contingent is completely full at the time of departure. In this case, you will receive an 80% refund of the payments you have made.
(B) If the contingent is not completely full at the time of departure, but you find a replacement for your spot who is (i) approved by Dan Beard Council to participant with the contingent; and (ii) makes all the required payments as they are due, you will receive a 50% refund of the payments you have made. If you find two replacements, you will receive a 100% refund of the payments you have made. Someone who has previously indicated to Dan Beard Council an interest in joining the contingent, such as by requesting or submitting an application, is not eligible to be a replacement for you under this section.
Any refund will be available to you shortly after July 21, 2013.
If your financial circumstances interfere with making payments when they are due, or if you have any questions about this refund policy, contact Jason Baldridge at (513)577-7700.
