Florida National High Adventure Sea Base

Does your perfect summer include the sun and surf? Do you feel there’s nothing quite like the feeling of having a tropical wind blow in your face while the surf crashes on shore as the sun sets over the ocean?

There's a wilderness that encompasses far more of the world's space that most people will never see: That’s the wilderness under, and above, the ocean. There can you see fan coral and sea grass, sting rays and manatees, sharks and goliath grouper. There can you travel the seas where explorers, pirates and adventurers have sailed for centuries. That is the wilderness that Scouts and Venturers will explore as members of Dan Beard Council’s Contingent to the Boy Scouts of America’s Florida Sea Base, located in the heart of the fabulous Florida Keys, on a subtropical island 75 miles south of Miami.

JULY 7-13, 2012

(Departure date may be July 6; return may be July 14)

In 2012 Dan Beard Council is sending two eight member coed crews to enjoy the Coral Reef Sailing or Keys Adventure programs.

A 40- to 50-foot sailing yacht will become your home for a week. It has a large self-contained galley and dining area where you will prepare wholesome meals from the fresh foods supplied by Sea Base, supplemented by fresh catches from trolling while underway.

Your captain will instruct you in navigation, fishing and sailing, and will remain on board for the entire trip. You choose your own float plan to explore the beautiful Florida Keys. This trip offers one-of-a-kind snorkeling and abundant fishing. You’ll spend a “port day” back at Sea Base and have the chance to demonstrate your sailing skills in Sea Base's fleet of Hunter Sailboats.

This adventure has the flexibility to include activities that personally interest the crew, such as night trawling to examine marine life, a possible overnight, great boating days visiting fabulous fishing and snorkeling areas.

Fishing is an integral part of Keys Adventure; your powerboat is supplied with heavy tackle and some lightweight rods and reels. Most crews are able to add some fresh fish or possibly lobster to the menu during their stay. Your itinerary will also include a great deal of snorkeling and the opportunity to learn more about marine biology from a fish-eye point of view. You will also have an opportunity to learn to sail on the Atlantic Ocean with a full day of cruising on the high seas. A few evenings you will also have the chance to go on a nighttime snorkel, a bridge fishing trip, and a sunset kayak tour!

The cost of the trip for each program is $1,600, which includes all transportation costs, admission fees, meals and lodging during the trip and the cost of pre-trip activities. Crew members supply their own personal gear, spending money, and enthusiasm. The official Venture uniform shorts and socks will be required for travel. A photo ID (valid driver's license, passport or state issued photo ID) is also required. Special dietary needs are the responsiblity of the particpant.

Participation is open to male and female Venture Scouts living within Dan Beard Council. Participants must be in good health, be able to swim 100 yards and stay afloat for one minute and, by July 7, 2012, be at least 14 years old or 13 and entering 9th in the fall of 2012.

Sea Base Crew members (youth and adult Crew Advisors) will be selected based on their application and personal interviews. There is space for six youth Venturers and two adults on each crew. No more than two scouts and one adult from a single unit may participate.

A $200 application fee is due upon registration, which becomes non-refundable after September 16, 2011. The remaining $1,400 balance is due in $200 payments on October 15, November 15, December 15, January 15, February 15 and March 15. Any payments which were due before you join the contingent are due at the time you join.

If you are outside of Dan Beard Council and are interested in joining our Sea Base Contingent, you should register to be placed on the waiting list. After January 1, 2012, youth from the waiting list will be contacted to fill available spots. You do not need to submit the application fee or make any payments while you are on the waiting list.

Dan Beard Council makes substantial payments and commitments well in advance of the departure date. It is important that you make your payments when they are due.

If you withdraw, you may receive a partial refund of the amount you have paid in one of two ways:

(A) The contingent is completely full at the time of departure. In this case, you will receive an 80% refund of the payments you have made.

(B) If the contingent is not completely full at the time of departure, but you find a replacement for your spot who is (i) approved by Dan Beard Council to participant with the contingent; and (ii) makes all the required payments as they are due, you will receive a 50% refund of the payments you have made. If you find two replacements, you will receive a 100% refund of the payments you have made. Someone who has previously indicated to Dan Beard Council an interest in joining the contingent, such as by requesting or submitting an application, is not eligible to be a replacement for you under this section.

Any refund will be available to you beginning July 16, 2012.

If your financial circumstances interfere with making payments when they are due, contact Jason Baldridge at (513)577-7700 ahead of time.
